Stimulated Emission

stimulated

An electron in a initial state will decay spontaneously from a higher energy state to a lower energy state randomly. For lasing, however, stimulated emission is required where an electron in an upper state is stimulated into a transition by a photon of the same energy as the transition to the lower state. The resulting photon stimulated by the first is emitted with the same phase and frequency as the first photon.
