Personal Biography:

Graduated with a first class B.Sc. (Hons) in 1984 and a Ph.D. in 1988 in Physics from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. Employed as a Research Associate in the Department of Physics, Heriot-Watt University 1987-1990, and at the Center for Research in Electro-Optics and Lasers (CREOL), University of Central Florida 1990-1992. Joined the Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering at the University of Glasgow in 1992 holding a 3 year Personal Research Fellowship from the Royal Society of Edinburgh/ Scottish Office Education Department (1992-1995), a 5 year EPSRC Advanced Research Fellowship (1995-2000) and a Support Fellowship Royal Society of Edinburgh/ Scottish Executive Enterprise and Lifelong Learning Department (2003). Appointed to a Personal Professorship in Optical and Quantum Electronics in 2004. Currently undertakes the roles Director of Postgraduate Studies in the Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering (2003--), Head of Engineering Graduate School (2005--), Academic Director of the EngD Programme in Systems Level Integration (2005--), Convener of the Heads of Graduate Schools Forum at the University of Glasgow (2006--), Head of the Joint Graduate School under the Glasgow Research Partnership in Engineering (2007--).

Research:

My research interests include nonlinear optics and applications, particularly in bulk and heterostructure semiconductors, semiconductor optoelectronics, magneto-optics and computational electromagnetics.
